Norfolk — Bawburgh & Norwich

A rough sketch, not to scale — Bawburgh sits about five miles west of Norwich city centre.

Bawburgh is a small village on the River Yare, about five miles west of Norwich city centre — close enough for an easy trip in, quiet enough that you’ll hear more birdsong than traffic. There’s a village green, a ford across the river, a pub, and Saxon round-tower St Mary & St Walstan’s Church, built where St Walstan — patron saint of farmers and farmworkers, born and buried in the village — was once the centre of a medieval pilgrimage. His restored holy well still stands in the field just below the church.

Norwich itself is about 15 minutes away by car (Wymondham 10 minutes, Hethersett 5), so Muntjack is well placed if you’re visiting the UEA, Norwich Research Park, Norwich & Norfolk University Hospital (NNUH), or the Norfolk Showground — about 5 minutes down the road.

Walk straight from the door

  • Bawburgh village & St Walstan’s Well — an easy, gentle loop from the door: the village green, the ford, the round-tower church, and the saint’s well in the meadow below it.
  • Bawburgh Lakes — seven lakes and around 80 acres of water alongside the River Yare, right next to the village. A peaceful lakeside walk, and one of Norfolk’s best-known coarse fisheries if you fancy a rod (permit required).

Worth the short drive

  • Marriott’s Way — a 24.6-mile traffic-free trail along two old railway lines between Norwich and Aylsham. A short drive to either end for a longer half-day walk or cycle through the Wensum valley.
  • Norwich itself — around 15 minutes by car: the Cathedral, Norwich Castle, the cobbled Lanes, and Norwich Market, one of the oldest and largest open-air markets in the country.

The coast

  • Cromer & Sheringham — around 45 minutes: Victorian piers, crab sandwiches, and old-fashioned seaside charm.
  • Wells-next-the-Sea & Holkham beach — about an hour: a vast stretch of golden sand backed by pine woods, one of Norfolk’s best-loved beaches.
  • Great Yarmouth — around 40 minutes: traditional seafront, amusements, and the Golden Mile if you fancy something livelier.

The Broads

  • Whitlingham Country Park — about 20 minutes: the nearest taste of the Broads, with two lakes, walking and cycling trails, and watersports right on Norwich’s doorstep.
  • Wroxham — about 30 minutes: the “capital of the Broads,” with self-drive day boats if you fancy a few hours on the water.

Historic houses & gardens

  • Blickling Estate — around 40 minutes: a Jacobean hall, gardens, and parkland, cared for by the National Trust.

Everyday essentials— Sainsbury’s and Aldi are both about 10 minutes away at Longwater Retail Park, with a Tesco Express in New Costessey for a quick top-up.
